TL;DR: On November 4, 2026, Klaviyo launched Personalized Content, an AI feature that rewrites the copy of an SMS flow message for each shopper based on how engaged they are, while keeping your offer, links and variable tags. It works in six flows (Added to Cart, Viewed Product, Started Checkout, Back in Stock, Price Drop and Win Back), requires the Klaviyo Personalization package, and automatically tests itself against your original text. If you have access, turn it on now on one or two high-volume abandonment flows, tighten your brand voice settings first, and don't expect a readable result until after BFCM.
What is Klaviyo Personalized Content for SMS flows?
Personalized Content is a new option inside Klaviyo Personalization that adapts the wording of an SMS flow message to the person receiving it. According to Klaviyo's launch post, the feature starts from the message you already wrote and uses browsing, cart activity and RFM (recency, frequency and monetary) signals to change the angle and tone, without touching your link, offer or dynamic tags.
Until now, every shopper who triggered a flow got the same text. Someone who looked at a product once and someone who came back to it three times in a week both got "You left something behind." Personalized Content is meant to close that gap.
The essentials, per Klaviyo's help center article:
- Plan: Only accounts on the Personalization package (formerly Marketing Analytics). It isn't a free toggle on every account.
- Channels: English SMS and plain-text RCS. Not MMS, RCS cards, email or push.
- Flows: Added to Cart, Viewed Product, Started Checkout, Back in Stock, Price Drop and Win Back.
- Exclusions: Accounts in prohibited SMS content categories or using age-gating won't see the option.
- Setup: The toggle, "Personalize this message," lives on each individual SMS message, not the whole flow, and you can turn it on while the flow is live.
How does Klaviyo decide what each text says?
Instead of generating a brand-new message for every person, Klaviyo writes reusable variants for groups of shoppers. Right now it sorts people into four intent levels, which show up in the preview as Active Shopper, Considering, Exploring and Unknown. Unknown covers profiles without enough signal. Klaviyo says it plans to expand this to eight RFM-based groups with five angles each.
It also handles product names more naturally. The help center explains that a long catalog name can be shortened to the way a shopper would actually say it, and that it only pulls product names from your own catalog rather than inventing items.
Before any variant sends, it has to pass four checks: it can't be longer than your original (so it doesn't raise your SMS cost), it must keep all your original links and add none, it has to clear the same compliance checks as any other message, and it has to follow your brand voice settings. If a variant fails, the shopper simply gets your original text.

Book a Strategy CallHow is performance measured?
Every personalized message runs as a built-in A/B test against your baseline. Klaviyo splits people entering the flow roughly evenly, so about half get the personalized version and half get your original. You don't set the test up yourself, and results stay hidden until they're statistically meaningful. Klaviyo says it monitors conversions, clicks, unsubscribes and deliverability, and recommends giving the test a couple of months before judging it.
Two practical constraints follow from that design. First, you can't turn on Personalized Content for a message that already has an active A/B test, so you'll need to end that test first. Second, you shouldn't run your own hand-built copy splits on the same message while Klaviyo's test is running, because you'd muddy both comparisons.
Should you turn it on right before Black Friday?
For most eligible brands, yes, on a limited set of flows. The timing cuts both ways, so it helps to be clear about what you're getting.
The upside is volume. Abandonment and browse flows see their heaviest traffic of the year between now and Cyber Monday, which means the test collects data faster than it would in a quiet month. SMS also matters more at peak: in Mailchimp's analysis of peak season 2025, SMS converted up to six times more often than email per message and earned about three times the revenue per message, even though email still drove more total revenue.
The downside is readability. A test that Klaviyo itself says needs a couple of months won't give you a clean answer by November 27. And holiday shoppers behave differently from January shoppers, so a BFCM-heavy result may not hold all year. Treat this season as the start of the test, not the verdict.
Our rule of thumb: if a flow is already a proven earner and you'd panic if it dipped during Cyber Week, start with one message in it, not every message. If a flow has room to improve, it's a good candidate to personalize fully.
Which flows should you personalize first?
- Started Checkout and Added to Cart. These hold your highest-intent shoppers and the most volume in Q4, so they'll produce a meaningful result soonest. The intent groups also make the most sense here, since an "Active Shopper" and an "Exploring" visitor really do need different nudges.
- Viewed Product. Browse abandonment is where generic copy usually feels most robotic, and where softer, curiosity-led wording can help.
- Back in Stock and Price Drop. These are timely by nature. Personalization can make the message feel less like an alert and more like a heads-up.
- Win Back. Valuable, but slower to read and less tied to BFCM. Consider saving it for January, when you're focused on re-engaging holiday buyers.
How do you set it up without hurting your brand voice?
- Write your brand voice settings first. Klaviyo's guidance is to set brand voice before turning anything on. Spell out words you never use, how casual you are, whether you use emoji and how you refer to discounts.
- Make sure your baseline is strong. The AI starts from your original message, and that original is also the control. A weak baseline makes the personalized version look better than it is.
- Read every sample tab. Review the Active Shopper, Considering, Exploring and Unknown previews before saving. Remember that samples are examples, not the exact text each person gets.
- Keep compliance in your own hands. Klaviyo runs compliance checks, but quiet hours, opt-out language and TCPA basics are still your responsibility at the flow and account level.
- Log the start date. Note which messages you personalized and when, so you can separate the test's effect from BFCM seasonality later.
What if you're on Postscript or Attentive instead?
This specific feature is Klaviyo-only, but the other SMS platforms are moving in a similar direction. Postscript's Q4 2026 release notes add an opt-in form trigger for automations, which is handy for VIP early-access and waitlist sign-ups during BFCM, plus UTM tracking for popup welcome messages. Attentive's Q3 2026 release notes include product affinity segments and AI-driven sign-up timing. Whatever platform you use, the principle is the same: let AI vary the message, but keep a clean control so you can prove it's working.
How Bolstered approaches AI in retention marketing
At Bolstered Media, email and SMS retention sits alongside paid media as the core of what we do, and we're official partners of Klaviyo, Postscript, Attentive, Meta and Shopify. Our AI-first approach means we use features like this where they can lift performance, but we always pair them with a control group and backend revenue checks. A new AI toggle is only worth keeping if it beats the message you already had.

Which Klaviyo flows support Personalized Content?

Is Personalized Content included in every Klaviyo plan?
No. It's included with the Klaviyo Personalization package, formerly called Marketing Analytics.

No. Each variant must stay within your original's length, keep all original links and add none. If it fails any check, the shopper gets your original message.
How long should I run the test before judging it?
Klaviyo recommends giving the built-in test a couple of months. Results stay hidden until they're statistically meaningful.
Can I use it on a message that already has an A/B test?
